OCCURRENCE OF GRAY LEAF SPOT OF PHYSALIS ALKEKENGI CAUSED BY CERCOSPORA cf PHYSALIDICOLA IN CHINA

Abstract:
Physalis alkekengi is a perennial herb in the Solanaceae family that has long been used as a valuable traditional Chinese medicine. In 2014, gray leaf spot disease causing significant damage to P. alkekengi occurred in the Medicinal Herb Garden of Shenyang Agricultural University, Liaoning province, China. The fungus mainly infected the leaves of the host plants. Lesions on leaves were sub-circular to angular, amphigenous, gray-brown to tan, and bordered by a diffuse chlorotic region. The causal agent from P. alkekengi was identified as Cercospora cf. physalidicola Speg. based on a combination of morphological characteristics, phylogenetic analysis, symptoms and pathogenicity tests. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formal report of gray leaf spot of P. alkekengi caused by C. cf. physalidicola in China.
