The Italian Phytopathological Society
On May 26, 1992, in front of the notary Dr. Fabro in Rome, Professors Antonio Graniti, Antonio Canova, and Paolo Alghisi signed the certificate of incorporation of the Società Italiana di Patologia Vegetale (Italian Phytopathological Society). With this formal act, SIPaV was born, while the former Società Italiana di Fitoiatria (SIF) and Associazione Fitopatologica Italiana (AFI) ceased to exist. SIPaV was established to bring together all those involved in plant and plant product diseases.

The certificate of incorporation defined a provisional Managing Board, consisting of the three signatories, who immediately appointed Professor Antonio Canova as the provisional President. Both the Board and the President were to remain in office until the first General Assembly.

On March 18, 1993, the first General Assembly was held in Bologna, presided over by President Prof. Canova and Secretary Prof. Gullino, during which elections were announced. At that time, SIPaV had 234 members (three-fourths of whom came from the former AFI and SIF), but membership grew in the following years, reaching 299 in 1996. On April 24, 1993, Prof. Giovanni Scaramuzzi was elected as the first President of SIPaV, and Professors Paolo Alghisi, Matteo Cirulli, Antonio Graniti, Romano Locci, and Giovanni Martelli were elected to the Managing Board.

From that point on, SIPaV began its activities, organizing an annual national congress, officially named the Convegno Nazionale from 1995 onward. In 2000 and 2008, the annual congress was not held because the 5th Congress of the European Foundation for Plant Pathology and the International Congress of Plant Pathology took place in Catania and Turin, respectively.

In 2002, during the IX Convegno Nazionale, the first Premio Scaramuzzi was awarded in memory of SIPaV's first elected President. This prize has since been awarded annually to the best doctoral dissertation in Plant Pathology.

In 1997, the Journal of Plant Pathology (JPP) was published for the first time, with Prof. Alberto Matta as Editor-in-Chief, Professors Romano Locci, Giovanni Martelli, and Umberto Mazzucchi as Senior Editors, and Prof. Giovanni Vannacci as Managing Editor. The journal was the continuation of the historical Rivista di Patologia Vegetale, first published in 1892. In 2004, thanks to significant efforts, JPP obtained an Impact Factor.

From 1996 to 2003, SIPaV also published a short newsletter (Notizie SIPaV), providing updates from various universities.
