The scientific journal «Rivista di Patologia Vegetale» (RPV), was founded in 1892 by the brothers Augusto Napoleone Berlese, a plant pathologist of the Royal Enological School of Avellino, and Antonio Berlese, an entomologist of the Royal Agricultural School of Higher Education of Portici (Naples).
RPV saw the light just one year after «Zeitschrift für Pflanzenkrankheiten», the first Plant Pathology journal in the world, founded in 1891 by P. Sorauer, a distinguished German plant pathologist. Thus, it preceded by 19 years the appearance of «Phytopathology», the international journal of the American Phytopathlogical Society, which is recognized as the most prestigious among the current plant pathology journals.
Except for a 18 year break during the First World War, the RPV life has spanned more that 100 years (1892-1995), during which five series of the journal were published, under the guidance of many distinguished ltalian plant pathologists.
Paolo Alghisi was one of them and took advantage of this experience during his much longer tenure (2003-2015) as “Senior Editor” in the «Journal of Plant Pathology» (JPP), i.e. the international continuation of RPV, which had been acquired by the Italian Society for Plant Pathology (SIPaV) to be its official journal. Thus, the birth of JPP is tightly linked with that of the SIPaV, in whose foundation Paolo Alghisi had a role of paramount importance. He strongly believed in the creation of a place where plant pathologists could meet for exchanging information, share experiences and debate the issues proper to the discipline, including those addressing its basic aspects.
For this, there was not much room in the extant Societies of that time, which had a prevailing plant protection connotation. Paolo succeeded in this endeavour notwhistanding the harshness encoutered in route. He was one of the founding fathers of SIPaV and an authoritative member of its fist Executive Council.
His contibutions to the well-being of the Italian plant pathology will long be remembered.
